MATFA Promotes Local Travel As Costs Rise, Safety Concerns Grow

KUALA LUMPUR, March 25 (Bernama) -- With international travel costs rising amid the ongoing Middle East conflict, domestic tourism under the Cuti-Cuti Malaysia campaign is emerging as the best option for Malaysians during the current school holidays, according to the Malaysian Association of Theme Park and Family Attractions (MATFA).

Its president, Tan Sri Richard Koh, said the repercussions of the conflict could affect major overseas holiday destinations, making local attractions a safer and more appealing choice for families.

“Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VM2026) has been impacted by the conflict in the Middle East, and MATFA members are not spared.

“Now is the best time for Malaysian families to take advantage of the RM1,500 tax relief provided by the government for spending on local theme parks and family attractions,” he said in a statement today.

The first-term school holidays run from March 21 to 29, coinciding with additional holidays for the Aidilfitri celebrations.

Despite global uncertainties, Koh said Malaysia remains well-positioned to attract tourists this year.

“Due to safety concerns, Asian travellers who previously opted for long-haul destinations are now choosing Southeast Asia instead.

“Travel to Malaysia is just as enjoyable as going anywhere else in the world, and it is safer and more affordable,” he added.

Koh also expressed hope that the MADANI Government would continue supporting the association through practical measures, including reviewing and reducing taxes to help ease operational costs.

“We need continued support from the government to ensure our members remain competitive during this challenging period,” he said.

He noted that MATFA members offer a wide range of attractions nationwide, including major theme parks such as Sunway Lagoon, Legoland Malaysia in Johor, Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park, Splash Out Langkawi, Lost World of Tambun, The TOP Penang and Escape Theme Park.

Other attractions include Berjaya Times Square Theme Park, Desaru Coast Adventure Waterpark, A’Famosa Water Theme Park, i-City Leisure Park, Borneo Samariang Water Park, Wet World Shah Alam, Bangi Wonderland and Pedas Hot Spring Water Park.

In Penang, The TOP Penang is offering a special RM10 entry fee for any single attraction in conjunction with its 10th anniversary.

To enhance the visitor experience, two new attractions - Ocean Explorer and Discovery Motion Theatre, have also been introduced.

For families with younger children, Koh recommended indoor playgrounds such as Jungle Gym, which has multiple outlets located mainly in shopping malls nationwide.

“Malaysia is one of the safest countries in the world, with diverse landscapes and vibrant cultures, making it an ideal destination for those seeking the best of Southeast Asia.

“You do not need to spend much or travel far to enjoy quality time with your loved ones, as everything is available locally,” he added.
