NGO Engagement Sessions On Bill To Separate AG-public Prosecutor Roles Completed - Azalina

KUALA LUMPUR, April 3 (Bernama) -- Engagement sessions with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) regarding the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026 on the separation of the roles of the Attorney-General and Public Prosecutor have been completed.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said that the proposals gathered from these sessions will be brought to the second-stage discussions of the Dewan Rakyat Special Select Committee on April 9.

“They provided views to amend the original draft - these are the perspectives of NGOs and civil society organisations,” she told reporters after delivering a keynote address at the Commonwealth Legal Education Association (CLEA) conference here today, adding that she is very open to all views and has no issues accepting them.

“However, we practise democratic principles; what is important in this consultative process is that we reach a consensus,” she said.

Azalina was reported to have previously said that the MADANI Government had agreed that the bill, along with the proposal to limit the Prime Minister’s term, be retabled at the next Parliament sitting.

The Dewan Rakyat agreed on March 3 to refer the bill to a Special Select Committee - chaired by Azalina and with 11 MPs from both government and opposition blocs - to allow all relevant parties to refine and scrutinise it.
