ALOR SETAR, April 5 (Bernama) -- The Education Ministry (MOE) will manage everything necessary to bring back the bodies of two students of its Teacher Training Institute Perlis Campus to Sarawak.

Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh said they would assist the families of both second-year students, who drowned during kayaking in Pantai Merdeka near Sungai Petani yesterday.

“The MOE expresses its sadness and conveys its condolences to all famiy members of the victims. We have lost two excellent future teachers and it is a loss to us,” he said when met at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital’s forensics department here today, adding that the ministry will conduct counselling sessions for students involved and other students impacted by the incident.

“Investigations will also be carried out in two ways, the police investigation that MOE will fully cooperate with and an immediate internal investigation to identify the cause of the incident,” he added.

Christopher Ling Jia Siang, 21, from Kuching, and Joey Ling Lin Siang, 20, from Sibu, were found drowned at about 7.30 pm while kayaking in Pantai Merdeka.

Family members of both victims are understood to be at the hospital to identify the victims.
