KUALA LUMPUR, April 8 (Bernama) -- Smart home technology is rapidly gaining traction in Malaysia as more households adopt connected devices to enhance convenience, efficiency and control.
From robot vacuums to intelligent air conditioning systems and app-controlled lighting, what was once considered a luxury is increasingly becoming part of everyday life.
This trend reflects a broader shift in consumer behaviour, as smart home technology moves beyond early adopters into the mainstream, including suburban communities.
Amid rising adoption, Xiaomi is accelerating its smart home expansion in Malaysia, focusing on affordability and seamless integration to reach a wider user base.
“Based on our observations and engagement with local users, Malaysians are increasingly adopting smart and connected Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT) devices in their daily lives, especially in recent years,” Eddie Huang, Xiaomi Malaysia country manager, told Bernama recently.
According to Data Bridge Market Research, Malaysia’s smart home market, valued at USD1.24 billion in 2024, is projected to reach USD4.08 billion by 2032, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 26.18 per cent.
Within this expanding ecosystem, security and access control are expected to be the fastest-growing segments. In contrast, areas such as entertainment controls, lighting systems, smart kitchen solutions, home appliances, and heating, ventilation and air conditioning continue to grow.
For Xiaomi, these trends are already translating into stronger local demand, with its Mijia product lineup, including air conditioners, refrigerators and washer-dryers, gaining traction in Malaysia, driven by competitive pricing and seamless integration.
The company also views Malaysia as part of a broader regional opportunity, as Southeast Asia emerges as one of the world’s fastest-growing economic regions. In response, Xiaomi is expanding its portfolio across smart home products, wearables and smartphones.
This expansion is guided by its “Human x Car x Home” strategy, which aims to build a fully connected ecosystem supported by large-scale manufacturing and an integrated supply chain, which includes its Wuhan Smart Home Appliances Factory.
“The Wuhan facility demonstrates advanced automation while adhering to the highest standards of quality control, enabling high-volume production at lower costs. This efficiency allows Xiaomi to pass savings on to consumers while maintaining product reliability,” he said.
Such operational scale has enabled the company to extend its smart home ecosystem across four major regions and 14 countries, extending its interconnected living experiences to a growing global user base.
Xiaomi said that at the core of this expanding ecosystem is artificial intelligence (AI), which enables devices to learn user habits, optimise energy consumption, and deliver predictive assistance.
In practical terms, this means devices are becoming more intelligent and adaptive. Robot vacuums now use AI-powered obstacle and dirt recognition to improve cleaning efficiency.
At the same time, Mijia air conditioners leverage cloud-based deep learning, big data, and real-time sensing to adapt to user preferences.
“With AI-driven decision-making, functions are automatically optimised, simplifying setup while delivering smarter comfort and energy savings,” said Eddie.
The technology company continues to invest heavily in research and development (R&D) to support these advancements, underpinning its technological progress and premiumisation strategy.
Xiaomi’s latest fourth-quarter financial report showed R&D expenditure reaching RMB33.1 billion in 2025 (approximately RM19.4 billion), up 37.8 per cent year-on-year, with its R&D workforce expanding to 25,457.
Over the past five years, cumulative R&D investment has reached RMB105.5 billion (approximately RM61.8 billion), with at least RMB60 billion (approximately RM35.1 billion) earmarked for AI development over the next three years.
As smart living continues to evolve, Xiaomi said it will further strengthen its long-term position while reaffirming its commitment to expanding its AIoT and smart home offerings in Malaysia, with more advanced features and new product launches expected in the near term.
