ISLAMABAD, April 8 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday confirmed that Tehran will participate in the upcoming negotiations with the United States (US) in Islamabad, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported.

During a telephonic conversation with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif that lasted for 45 minutes, President Pezeshkian thanked Sharif and appreciated the efforts of the Pakistani leadership to bring about a temporary ceasefire between Iran and the US, according to an official statement issued from the Prime Minister's office.

"He confirmed that Iran would be participating in the negotiations in Islamabad," it said.

Sharif expressed appreciation for Iran’s decision to agree to a ceasefire and accept Pakistan’s offer to host talks later this week.

He also conveyed his respects to Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.

The format of the talks is not known yet, but government sources in Islamabad told Anadolu that Pakistan's top diplomat Ishaq Dar will represent the Pakistani side.

Sharif had announced the two-week ceasefire and invited delegations from the US and Iran to Islamabad on Friday "to further negotiate for a conclusive agreement to settle all disputes."

US President Donald Trump announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran on Tuesday, saying Tehran presented a “workable” 10-point proposal for negotiations.

The announcement came less than two hours before the expiration of a deadline Trump had repeatedly extended for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and accept an agreement or face “the destruction of an entire civilisation.”

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said the 10-point proposal delivered to the United States through Pakistani mediation includes a key US commitment to non-aggression, continued Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz, acceptance of uranium enrichment, and the lifting of all primary and secondary sanctions.

The proposal also includes paying compensation to Iran, withdrawing US combat forces from the region, and ending the war on all fronts, including the war against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
