KUALA LUMPUR, April 9 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (ABIM) has proposed the establishment of an independent and transparent monitoring mechanism under the United Nations (UN) to ensure compliance with the ceasefire between the United States and Iran.
Its president, Ahmad Fahmi Mohd Samsudin, said all parties must demonstrate clear, consistent political will free from any hidden agendas in implementing the ceasefire.
“Any violation of this ceasefire constitutes a breach of the fundamental principles of the UN Charter, particularly the prohibition of the use of force in international relations,” he said in a statement today.
Ahmad Fahmi said failure to act consistently and without selectivity would erode trust in the global governance system and reinforce perceptions of geopolitical hypocrisy.
“ABIM calls for diplomatic efforts to be strengthened to build trust between the United States and Iran, paving the way for a more comprehensive, just and lasting peace agreement.
“This approach is not only crucial for regional stability, but also a prerequisite for global peace, including ensuring the security of energy supply chains and the stability of strategic routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, which have direct implications for economies, including Malaysia,” he said.
He added that all forms of provocation, threats, misleading narratives and military actions that could undermine the ceasefire must be halted immediately, including ongoing actions by the Zionist Israeli regime in Palestine and surrounding areas.
Ahmad Fahmi said any peace efforts in West Asia would be meaningless without a just resolution to the Palestinian issue, which remains the root cause of regional instability.
“In this regard, any peace framework must include recognition of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and an end to prolonged occupation,” he said.
He said the conflict involving Iran cannot be viewed in isolation from developments in Lebanon, which has become an extension of regional tensions, with continued violations of sovereignty and attacks by the Zionist Israeli regime, demonstrating that a piecemeal approach would only shift and expand the conflict to other areas.
He said such conditions show that selective peace is not only fragile but risks triggering further escalation and deepening the humanitarian crisis in the region.
Therefore, Ahmad Fahmi said any regional peace framework must be comprehensive, including an immediate end to violations in Lebanon, the cessation of occupation in Palestine, and a genuine commitment by all parties to end violence in all its forms.
“ABIM stresses that the world in the 21st century cannot remain trapped in outdated conflict paradigms that cost innocent lives and undermine the foundations of humanity. True peace requires moral courage to end violence comprehensively, without selectivity and without geopolitical hypocrisy.
“ABIM also urges Malaysia to continue playing an active role through multilateral diplomacy, including within the frameworks of ASEAN, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the United Nations, to support principled and just de-escalation efforts,” he said.
U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced a two-week suspension of military operations against Iran following mediation efforts.
In response, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran would halt defensive operations if attacks against the country ceased.
