Govt Open To Ministerial Pay Cut If Economy Worsens - PM Anwar

17/04/2026 05:06 PM

CYBERJAYA, April 17 (Bernama) -- The MADANI Government is prepared to consider cutting Cabinet ministers’ salaries if the national economy deteriorates further amid the global energy crisis, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.

He said current ministerial pay is relatively low given the scale of responsibilities, but remains justified as long as ministers perform well.

For now, he stressed, the priority is ensuring effective governance rather than focusing on salary reductions.

“Our salaries are relatively low, but what matters is that ministers carry out their duties well. As for me, I have no issue with not taking a salary, but it is their right as long as they perform.

“However, if the economic situation worsens, we may have to consider reviewing or reducing ministers’ pay,” he told reporters after Friday prayers at Surau Bomba Cyberjaya here.

He was responding to a question on whether the government would review proposals to reduce ministers’ salaries, similar to measures implemented in Indonesia.
