KUALA NERUS, April 18 (Bernama) -- The Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) is targeting the participation of 7,500 youths nationwide in the Rakan Bumi 2026 programme to cultivate more change agents for sustainable living.

Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari said the programme was a key initiative under the Mega Rakan Muda 2026 Calendar, aimed at mobilising youths through high-impact volunteer activities focused on environmental protection, conservation and sustainability.

He said the national launch in Terengganu today involved activities such as beach clean-ups, tree planting and marine conservation efforts, and would be expanded to other states.

“The main objective is to ensure youths take responsibility and contribute to the nation’s future, while fostering love for the environment,” he told reporters after launching the national-level Rakan Bumi: Projek Planet Rakan Muda 2026 programme at Pulau Redang Marine Park here today.

Mohammed Taufiq also thanked non-governmental organisations, strategic partners and the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry (NRES) for supporting the programme, including contributing trees for planting at the marine park.

He said hot weather did not disrupt the programme as health and safety precautions, including medical standby teams and continuous monitoring, were in place.

“I am happy to see youths taking part voluntarily. They came on their own initiative, and I hope they will encourage more young people to join this effort,” he said.

In a statement, KBS said the programme was open to youths from all backgrounds interested in contributing to environmental preservation and serving as agents of change in society.

It said the public could visit the official website or follow state Youth and Sports Department social media channels for details on programmes in their respective states.

KBS hopes the programme will become a high-impact national model for youth sustainability initiatives, producing a progressive, responsible and environmentally conscious generation.
