SHAH ALAM, April 20 (Bernama) -- The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has once again urged the state government to prioritise resolving flood issues through comprehensive planning and more effective, immediate action.
The Ruler said he had repeatedly advised the government to seek expertise from international specialists, particularly from the Netherlands, to develop sustainable solutions to the long-standing problem.
“The flood issue is something I have raised dozens of times. Unfortunately, my advice has not been taken seriously...it is like pouring water on a yam leaf (meaning wasted advice).
“Although allocations are made every year to address floods, no effective results are visible. Flooding continues to occur in several areas, especially residential zones, causing hardship to my people,” he said.
Sultan Sharafuddin said this in his royal address at the opening of the Fourth Session of the 15th Selangor State Legislative Assembly today.
The Sultan also called for the cleaning of the Klang River to ensure a sustainable supply of clean water for the growing population.
“I will not tire of calling for action until the problems of flooding and clean water supply are resolved once and for all,” he stressed.
His Royal Highness proposed that the state government place greater focus on developing the waste-to-energy industry, describing it as a key sector for addressing waste management and sustainable energy challenges.
In addition, the Ruler called for a more systematic and integrated approach to tackling potholes, a persistent issue affecting road users.
Touching on pig farming, Sultan Sharafuddin reiterated that such activities are unsuitable in Selangor due to land constraints, proximity to densely populated Muslim areas, and concerns over river and air pollution.
“Despite this, there are still parties who refuse to comply with my directive,” he said, suggesting that pork supply for non-Muslims could instead be sourced from other regions, including Sarawak.
Meanwhile, Sultan Sharafuddin advised political leaders to set aside differences and work together for the benefit of the people, especially amid current economic uncertainties.
“Lately, I see too much politicking. This confuses the rakyat and can lead to division.
“Let us fulfil our responsibilities with trust, honesty and sincerity to ensure Selangor continues to progress and prosper,” said the Sultan.
