KUALA LUMPUR, April 26 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today congratulated national track cycling ace Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang on winning the gold medal in the men’s keirin event at the 2026 UCI Track World Cup at the National Velodrome in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, yesterday.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said the remarkable success of the rider, popularly known as “The Pocket Rocketman”, stems from the spirit and soul of a true champion.
“This man is a living legend. What Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang did yesterday was truly extraordinary.
“Anyone who witnessed his sprint yesterday knows it was not just an ordinary ride, but one driven by the spirit and soul of a champion. Congratulations Datuk Azizul. Thank you for continuing to make Malaysia proud!” he said in a Facebook post today.
The outstanding performance by the Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medallist saw him defeat main rival and world champion Harrie Lavreysen of the Netherlands, who finished second, while Nicholas Paul had to settle for third place.
The victory marked Mohd Azizulhasni’s second win in the World Cup series this season after clinching the same event in Perth, Australia, in March.
