Brazil’s Bolsonaro Hospitalised For Shoulder Surgery

BUENOS AIRES, May 2 (Bernama-dpa) -- Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro has been readmitted to a hospital in the capital Brasília to undergo shoulder surgery, according to news portal G1 on Friday, reported German Press Agency (dpa).

The 71-year-old former leader, who is currently serving a prison sentence of more than 27 years for an attempted coup d'état, received special authorisation from the Supreme Federal Court for the transfer.

Bolsonaro is presently serving his term under house arrest due to ongoing health complications.

While Bolsonaro has faced a series of medical issues stemming from a stabbing during 2018 election campaign, officials stated the current procedure is related to a fall in January during which he injured his shoulder.

He was previously hospitalised with pneumonia in March and spent time in intensive care.

Bolsonaro has been in custody since November of last year following a conviction for conspiring with others to orchestrate a coup against the government of his successor, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

But the duration of his incarceration could soon be reduced.

On Thursday, the Brazilian Congress overrode a veto by President Lula, upholding a law that allows for the recalculation of his sentence.
