KUALA LUMPUR, May 4 (Bernama) -- Grammy Award-winning violinist Charles Yang will perform in a special concert, Charles Yang Reloaded, presented by the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) at the Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) on May 16.

In a statement, MPO said the concert, scheduled at 8 pm at KLCC, will be led by its Resident Conductor Gerard Salonga and promises a high-energy musical experience blending classical techniques with contemporary genres.

“The performance will showcase Yang’s distinctive style that merges classical violin with elements of pop, blues and rock, offering audiences a refreshing crossover experience,” it said.

MPO said Yang, a recipient of the Leonard Bernstein Award, has been described as a musician who brings the charisma of a rock star to classical music performances.

“He has performed at prestigious festivals such as the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival and Ravinia Festival, and collaborated with renowned artistes including Joshua Bell, Steve Miller and Jon Batiste,” it added.

It said Yang is also a member of the trio Time For Three, which won a Grammy Award for its album Letters for the Future.

MPO said Yang, together with pianist Peter Dugan, will present a diverse programme featuring classical crossover arrangements of well-known works.

“The repertoire includes Somewhere Over The Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz, Astor Piazzolla’s Oblivion, Eagles’ Hotel California and Paul McCartney’s Blackbird,” it said.

“It will also feature popular hits by Michael Jackson, including Thriller and Billie Jean, reimagined through fresh classical-crossover interpretations,” it added.

Yang will also showcase his vocal abilities in selected pieces.

“These include Frank Sinatra’s Fly Me To The Moon, the traditional House of the Rising Sun, Sam Cooke’s A Change Is Gonna Come and Streets of Berlin, an original composition by Yang,” it said.

“It promises an exhilarating musical journey where classical precision meets contemporary flair, with each piece offering a unique reinterpretation for audiences,” it added.
