KUALA LUMPUR, May 10 (Bernama) -- The government is still examining the best mechanism for the proposed revision of petrol subsidies for high-income earners, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said discussions on the proposal had been ongoing for the past several weeks involving various ministries and relevant committees, but no final decision has been made on whether the targeted subsidy scheme would involve the T20, T15 or other income categories.

“The proposal has been studied over the past three weeks to a month, but it has not yet been finalised whether it will involve the T20 or T15 groups, so that it does not burden the upper middle-income group and can be implemented more effectively,” he told reporters after an engagement session with Indian students at Universiti Malaya today.

The Prime Minister, who is also the Finance Minister, saipetrol subsidy, d the matter would be finalised soon.

He was responding to questions regarding the government’s proposal to review fuel subsidies for high-income earners, as well as plans concerning the continuity of the country’s oil supply, which are expected to be announced in the middle of this month.

Previously, Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir reportedly said the Prime Minister was expected to announce plans related to the country’s fuel supply continuity amid global uncertainties caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Akmal Nasrullah, the plan is expected to focus on ensuring sufficient domestic fuel supply to sustain the country’s economic activities, following previous assurances by the government that current supplies would remain adequate until June.
