KUALA LUMPUR, May 13 (Bernama) -- Police intercepted and seized a lorry carrying 300 sacks of smuggled rice weighing 15,000 kilogrammes at the Simpang Tiga Felda Papulut traffic light junction in Gerik, Perak, early this morning.
Bukit Aman’s Wildlife Crime Bureau/Special Intelligence Unit commander SAC Datuk Mohd Zaki Ashar said the 41-year-old lorry driver was detained in the Op Taring Bravo 4 raid at 6 am.
The rice, estimated to be worth RM69,000, was believed to have been smuggled in from a neighbouring country via illegal routes, he said in a statement.
“Checks found that the lorry driver failed to produce any valid documents related to ownership of all the rice.
“The total value of the seizure is estimated at RM184,000, comprising the rice and the Nissan UD lorry,” he added.
The arrest and seized items have been handed over to the Perak Padi and Rice Regulatory Agency for further action under Section 20 of the Padi and Rice Control Act 1994.
