KUALA LUMPUR, May 25 (Bernama) -- Kuala Lumpur has the potential to rival major regional concert destinations such as Singapore, but stronger coordination across the country’s live entertainment ecosystem is needed to attract more international tours and global artistes, according to Live Nation Malaysia managing director Paramananthan Rajagopal.

He said Kuala Lumpur already possesses many of the key elements needed to become a major touring destination in Asia, including infrastructure, passionate fans and a strategic location, but improvements in coordination, venue readiness and industry support remain crucial.

“Actually, Kuala Lumpur has everything. Maybe even more than some other cities, but what we need now is coordination.

“Events cannot be done by one person alone. Everybody has to coordinate to make a show happen,” he told reporters after the launch of KL Headline Season 2026 here tonight.

Paramananthan said Malaysia’s live entertainment industry must also work together to strengthen the international perception of Kuala Lumpur as a reliable concert destination.

“Most international artistes and management teams will Google Kuala Lumpur before deciding on tours. Sometimes what comes out are stories about cancellations, protests or approval issues.

“But in countries like Singapore, the narrative is different. They promote the positive side and position themselves as a concert destination,” he said.

He said the issue was not solely about facilities, as Kuala Lumpur already had the necessary infrastructure to host large-scale productions, although some venues required upgrading to meet current fan and production expectations.

“Fans are paying a lot for tickets today. They expect better seating, better views and proper facilities. So venue maintenance and upgrades are important,” he said.

Paramananthan said venue availability was among the biggest challenges faced by concert organisers in Malaysia, especially as international tours operate on fixed schedules across multiple countries.

“Our problem behind the scenes is venue availability. Tours already have fixed dates and sometimes we cannot shift them because venues are unavailable,” he said, adding that some countries prioritise international touring acts as part of broader economic strategies.

He said the live entertainment industry should no longer be viewed purely as entertainment, noting that concerts generated significant economic spillover across sectors including tourism, hospitality, retail and transportation.

Malaysia hosted more than 400 concerts in 2024 alone, generating over RM553 million in tourism and economic impact, while the industry is projected to contribute close to RM1.7 billion to the national economy this year, he said.

Paramananthan said fans from neighbouring countries including Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, Hong Kong and the Philippines were increasingly travelling to Kuala Lumpur specifically for concerts, reflecting the city’s growing influence within the regional live entertainment landscape.

He said the newly launched KL Headline Season 2026 was created to place Kuala Lumpur firmly on the global touring map and position the city as a premier entertainment capital in Asia.

The launch was also attended by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh.

The initiative, developed by Live Nation Malaysia in collaboration with PR Worldwide, Tourism Malaysia and CelcomDigi, is expected to bring 25 international music performances across six major venues throughout 2026, attracting an estimated 500,000 fans from Malaysia and across the region, with a lineup that includes major international acts such as Post Malone, The Weeknd, BTS, Laufey and LANY.
