KPDN Raids Two Taiping Entertainment Outlets For Using Unauthorised Song Recordings

IPOH, June 12 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) of Perak raided two entertainment centres in Taiping yesterday for allegedly infringing copyright by using unauthorised copies of film, sound and song recordings for commercial purposes.

Its director, Datuk Kamalludin Ismail, said they conducted the raid at 2.30 pm after receiving complaints from representatives of the copyright owners.

“Investigations found that both premises were using karaoke systems containing infringing copies of film, sound and song recordings for business purposes without the permission of the copyright owners.

“All karaoke sets, monitors and documents have been seized for further investigation. The total value of the seizure involving the two premises is estimated at RM56,235,” he said in a statement today.

He said the owners of the two premises also failed to submit any licence or authorisation documents for the film works claimed by the copyright owners.

As such, the premises are suspected of committing an offence under the Copyright Act 1987 for possessing, keeping or controlling infringing copies for purposes other than private and domestic use.
