SHAH ALAM, June 13 (Bernama) -- Durian has been selected as the pilot project for the implementation of the GPL (Grading, Packing and Labelling) Traceability System as part of the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority's (FAMA) efforts to strengthen the development and marketing agenda of the country's agri-food sector.
FAMA said the digital system, which will be implemented under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), will enable information on agricultural production and supply chains to be recorded, monitored and traced in real time, thereby enhancing transparency, integrity and traceability of products marketed and exported.
“Durian has been selected as the pilot project for the implementation of the system before it is expanded to other export-oriented commodities such as watermelon, papaya and starfruit.
“This initiative is expected to further strengthen the country's capability in meeting the requirements of international markets, which are placing increasing emphasis on product traceability and quality assurance,” the authority said in a statement today.
FAMA expressed confidence that close collaboration between government agencies and the private sector, such as MAPC Sdn Bhd, will continue to strengthen the national agri-food marketing ecosystem and support Malaysia’s aspiration of becoming a globally competitive hub for premium durian production and exports.
Earlier today, FAMA conducted an Industry Visit and Strategic Collaboration Empowerment Programme with durian exporter MAPC Sdn Bhd at the company's premises in Pandamaran, Port Klang.
The visit, led by FAMA director-general Abdul Rashid Bahri and the authority's top management team, formed part of ongoing efforts to strengthen strategic partnerships aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of the country's agri-food products in both domestic and international markets.
The programme focused on sharing best practices in export durian supply chain management, including MyGAP certification and GPL aspects, namely product grading, packaging and labelling, which are key elements in meeting global market requirements, particularly in China, one of the main destinations for Malaysian durian exports.
MAPC Sdn Bhd is among the country's leading durian exporters, with approximately 90 per cent of its durian production exported to the Chinese market.
“Between 2023 and 2025, the company recorded durian export sales valued at RM150 million, demonstrating its capability as a key player in Malaysia's durian export industry.
“This success has also been supported by the use of digital platforms and social media channels such as Douyin, WeChat and Xiaohongshu to expand market reach and strengthen the branding of Malaysian premium durian at the international level,” the statement said.
During the visit, FAMA also presented a token of appreciation to the company, which is a holder of the Malaysia’s Best Certification.
“FAMA is confident that close cooperation between government agencies and the private sector, such as MAPC Sdn Bhd, will continue to strengthen the national agri-food marketing ecosystem and support Malaysia’s aspiration of becoming a globally competitive hub for premium durian production and exports,” it added.
