PUTRAJAYA, June 19 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia Competition Commission (MyCC) and the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen strategic cooperation in data sharing, economic analysis and capacity building.
The MoU was signed by MyCC chairman Tan Sri Idrus Harun and Chief Statistician of Malaysia Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin at a ceremony held at the DOSM headquarters here yesterday.
The signing was witnessed by MyCC chief executive officer Datuk Iskandar Ismail and DOSM Deputy Chief Statistician (Economic Programmes) Siti Asiah Ahmad.
MyCC said in a statement that the collaboration signifies the government’s commitment to adopt a data-centric approach to strengthen the implementation of government policies, including enforcement efforts related to competition issues in the country.
According to the commission, the collaboration provides a framework that encompasses the strengthening and sharing of data, capacity building programmes and the exchange of expertise to continuously monitor and improve competition processes across various sectors of the economy.
MyCC also views the collaboration as an opportunity to strengthen the role of data and analytics in competition economics, especially when data is now considered the world’s main commodity.
Meanwhile, Mohd Uzir said in a separate statement that the MoU covers the sharing of administrative and related economic data, as well as enabling a more comprehensive evaluation and understanding of data through combining expertise in the fields of statistics and competition.
He said the collaboration also focuses on the development of human capital through capacity-building programmes, training, exchanges of expertise and knowledge-sharing initiatives between the two organisations.
“This strategic collaboration also focuses on joint monitoring of strategic economic sectors and government policies to ensure the implementation of fair competition across all economic sectors,” he said,
Mohd Uzir said the collaboration is expected to strengthen the capablities of both agencies in supporting the provision of more comprehensive statistics and analyses, in addition to enhancing understanding of market structures and dynamics, supply chains and factors influencing price movements.
He said that, overall, the MoU will strengthen the sharing of knowledge and expertise between both agencies, as well as support the development of a more competitive and transparent economic ecosystem, while helping to safeguard the interests of businesses, consumers and the Malaysian economy.
