KANGAR, June 20 (Bernama) -- National security and public wellbeing cannot rest on the authorities alone, but require the support, awareness and cooperation of society at all levels, said Perlis police chief Datuk Muhammad Abdul Halim.

He said that ties between the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the public must be strengthened through community synergy programmes aimed at bringing both sides closer and fostering mutual trust.

“The peace we enjoy today is the result of joint efforts. Without public support, the authorities’ initiatives would not reach the desired level,” he said at a PDRM community synergy programme here last night in conjunction with the 83rd birthday of the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail.

Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin and the Raja Perempuan of Perlis, Tuanku Tengku Fauziah Almarhum Tengku Abdul Rashid, graced the event.

Muhammad said programmes of this nature provide a platform to reach out to the community, hear public views, and strengthen awareness of the shared responsibility in preserving peace and public order.

“Through the exhibitions and activities provided, the public can gain a clearer understanding that PDRM has various branches of duties covering crime prevention, community safety, law enforcement, public order control, special operations, as well as support services to the public.

“Such an approach is important in improving public understanding that the role of the police goes beyond crime-fighting and also includes building a safer, more caring and responsible community,” he said.

He expressed confidence that such programmes would help strengthen ties between PDRM and the public, as well as promote unity, solidarity and collective responsibility for security in Perlis.
