PGSM To Implement BAGUS Initiative For Individuals Requiring Syarie Legal Aid

27/06/2026 05:57 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 (Bernama) -- The Syarie Lawyers Association of Malaysia (PGSM) will immediately implement the Syarie Legal Aid Programme (BAGUS) after receiving a RM1.5 million allocation announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today.

Its President, Musa Awang, said individuals who require syarie legal aid but cannot afford it can obtain representation services through PGSM, supported by the funds channeled by the government.

He said that through BAGUS, PGSM will provide a panel of syarie lawyers to individuals facing financial constraints in hiring a lawyer, by offering legal advice or representing them in the Syariah Court.

"The association will immediately implement the programme and make an announcement to the public about it once the funds have been channeled.

"The Syarie Lawyers Association of Malaysia, which has a nationwide network, is expected to be able to offer solutions to the community through the funds provided," he said in a statement here today.

Earlier, Anwar, when officiating the National Convention of the Syarie Legal Profession 2026, announced the RM1.5 million allocation to PGSM to expand access to syarie legal aid for the underprivileged through BAGUS.

The Prime Minister said that access to justice must be given serious attention, as there are still many, particularly the poor and single mothers, who face difficulties in securing legal representation in the Syariah Court.
