JDT'S HIDALGO: 'THE BOSS' FUELLED HUNGER FOR HISTORIC CUP WIN

24/05/2026 09:58 AM

KUALA LUMPUR, May 24 (Bernama) — Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) winger Manuel Hidalgo revealed that the "hunger" to secure a historic fourth consecutive Malaysia Cup title was fuelled by the visionary leadership and motivational words of “the boss”, or JDT owner, the Regent of Johor Tunku Mahkota Ismail.

Speaking after JDT’s 2-0 victory over Kuching City FC in the 2025-2026 final at the National Stadium, Bukit Jalil last night, Hidalgo said the team’s success was their way of repaying the Regent’s unwavering support.

“He always speaks so good. He's an amazing leader. Hearing him and going to the pitch is amazing because you go in with a lot of hunger.

“He does everything for us, for our families, so we only can repay him by this win,” he said.

JDT’s triumph made them the first club to lift the prestigious trophy four times in a row, a feat Hidalgo described as the pinnacle of an unprecedented season for the Southern Tigers.

“I think it was a historic season. We achieved a lot of things that never happened before, so we are so happy. Will now rest and be back next year for more,” he added.

Commenting on the match where he was substituted relatively early, Hidalgo said the decision was a strategic move by the coach to ensure victory.

“I think it was a tactical decision. The coach decides, so I just follow. I understand that can happen,” he said.

Hidalgo also dropped a strong hint about his prospect of becoming a naturalised player for the national team, Harimau Malaya.

“I think soon you will have an answer. I hope yes. Very excited. Very, very excited.”
