Sunway Malls Breaks Record With Six Wins At PPK Malaysia Awards

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 13 (Bernama) -- Sunway Malls made history by securing the highest number of awards ever won by a mall group, at the Persatuan Pengurusan Kompleks (PPK) Malaysia Awards, taking home six awards in the seventh edition of the prestigious event.

The awards ceremony, held at Sunway Resort Hotel, in conjunction with PPK Malaysia’s 40th anniversary celebration, saw Sunway Malls dominate the night, particularly in the sustainability category, where it won four out of six awards.

PPK Malaysia is a key player in recognising the contributions of Malaysia’s mall industry, which plays a pivotal role in the nation’s tourism sector.

The awards, which focus on experiential marketing and sustainability, aim to elevate professionalism in the industry. The Top Sustainability Practices category was introduced this year to acknowledge the significant contributions of malls to Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) efforts.

Sunway Malls' chief executive officer, HC Chan, said that the group’s record-breaking achievement reflected its commitment to innovation, creativity, and sustainability.

“As malls become increasingly public spaces, it is important that we continue to connect, at emotive and experiential levels,” he said at the event, which was officiated by Malaysian Tourism Promotion Board (Tourism Malaysia) chairperson Datuk Dr Yasmin Mahmood.

Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah, also attended the event, along with several key retailers.

In the marketing and sustainability categories, Sunway Velocity Mall won two Platinum awards, while Sunway Carnival Mall secured two Gold awards. Sunway Pyramid and Sunway Big Box Retail Park each earned a Silver award in the sustainability category.

Sunway Velocity Mall’s Platinum wins were for its campaigns, 'My Christmas Story - One Fabric at a Time' and 'A Journey Towards Net Zero Emission', which were recognised for Best Experiential Marketing and Top Sustainability Practices, respectively.

The mall's creative leadership in sustainability was showcased, through initiatives such as its 40-foot Christmas tree made from 1.7 tonnes of upcycled fabric waste, a project which earned a spot in the Malaysia Book of Records.

Sunway Carnival Mall won Gold for 'Fostering a Love for Reading with Le Petit Prince', in the Best Experiential Marketing category, and 'Empowering Communities for Sustainable Growth', in the Top Sustainability Practices category.

The mall’s initiatives support the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a focus on fostering literacy and implementing energy-efficient systems.

Sunway Big Box Retail Park and Sunway Pyramid each won Silver in the sustainability category. Sunway Big Box was recognised for 'Driving Energy Efficiency Through Solar and EV Infrastructure in Johor', which includes investments in electric vehicle (EV) superchargers and solar panels.

Sunway Pyramid’s winning campaign, SCAN (Sustainability Collaboration Alliance Network) & REX (Retail Extended Learning), highlighted its partnerships with various stakeholders to promote sustainable business practices.

Sunway Malls, one of Malaysia’s largest mall owner-operators, currently has seven retail developments across the country, and three more in the pipeline, including Sunway Ipoh Mall, which is set to be Perak’s largest mall when completed in 2027.

PPK Malaysia, established in 1984, plays a significant role in uniting the country’s shopping mall industry, and collaborating with ministries and government agencies to drive growth in the sector.
