CIMA Offers RM590,000 Grant To Advance Eco-friendly Marine Concrete Research
KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 (Bernama) -- Cement Industries of Malaysia Bhd (CIMA) has allocated a grant of RM590,000 to advance research on eco-friendly marine concrete solutions.
Universiti Sains Malaysia’s (USM) Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies (CEMACS) will lead the research, while CIMA will contribute its expertise in green technology and sustainable construction materials to ensure that the developed solutions are environmentally responsible and structurally sound, the cement product maker said in a statement.
The research grant letter of offer was signed by all parties involved during a ceremony at CEMACS today.
“The collaboration exemplifies how academia and industry can co-create practical, science-based solutions that contribute directly to planetary health -- protecting our coastal ecosystems, and enhancing biodiversity, while meeting infrastructure needs,” according to a statement.
CIMA said the project aims to develop marine concrete that balances ecological considerations with the structural durability required for coastal infrastructure.
“It is a significant step toward Malaysia’s aspiration of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, aligning with international climate commitments,” it said.
Solutions derived from this research are expected to be adopted nationwide as part of various sustainable development initiatives – underscoring CIMA’s dedication to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure).
