Unit Price Index Of Steel Down In May 2025 -- DOSM

KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 (Bernama) -- The unit price index of steel recorded a decrease of between negative 0.1 per cent and negative 3.1 per cent across most parts of Malaysia in May 2025 compared to the previous month, said the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM). 

It said the unit price index of this material has recorded a decline for five consecutive months. 

Chief statistician Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the highest decrease was recorded in Miri (-3.1 per cent), followed by Tawau (-2.4 per cent) and Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Melaka and Negeri Sembilan (-2.3 per cent).

“The unit price index of steel and metal sections showed a decline between negative 0.1 per cent to negative 3.5 per cent in May 2025 as compared to the previous month.

“The highest decrease was recorded in Miri (-3.5 per cent), followed by Pulau Pinang, Kedah and Perlis (-1.2 per cent),” he said in a statement today.

Meanwhile, DOSM reported that the price index per unit of cement remained unchanged for almost all areas in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak. 

However, it said the unit price index for cement inched up in several areas, namely Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Melaka and Negeri Sembilan (0.4 per cent), and Pulau Pinang, Kedah and Perlis (0.3 per cent).

An annual comparison for the period of May 2024 and May 2025 indicated that the unit price index of cement rose by between 0.1 per cent and 3.5 per cent for almost all areas in Malaysia.

“The highest increase was recorded in Johor and Tawau, Sabah (3.5 per cent), respectively and followed by Pahang (3.3 per cent).

“Meanwhile, the average price of Ordinary Portland cement showed a slight increase (0.2 per cent), with an average price of RM23.75 per 50 kilogramme (kg) bag, compared to April 2025 (RM23.70 per 50 kg bag),” DOSM said.

Conversely, an annual comparison of the unit price index of steel recorded a decrease of negative 2.2 per cent to negative 15.5 per cent in May 2025, compared to the same month last year, for almost all areas in Malaysia.

Commenting on the average price per unit of steel, which includes mild steel round bars and Mycon 60 high-tensile deformed bars, Mohd Uzir said it recorded a slight decrease of negative 0.4 per cent, with an average price of RM3,476.75 per tonne in May 2025, compared to RM3,490.80 per tonne in the previous month.

The department said the Building Material Cost Index (BCI) with steel bars for all building categories in Peninsular Malaysia decreased by negative 0.1 per cent to negative 0.9 per cent in May 2025, compared to the previous month. 

It said the decrease in BCI with steel was recorded for almost all building categories, except in Perak.
