Bursa Malaysia Ends Morning Session Lower On Profit-taking

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 (Bernama) -- Bursa Malaysia ended the morning trading session lower, weighed down by profit-taking as markets digested the latest corporate earnings in the United States (US), analysts said. 

At 12.30 pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) slipped 0.61 per cent or 10.15 points to 1,631.82, from Tuesday’s close of 1,641.97. 

The benchmark index, which opened 1.83 points higher at 1,643.80, moved between 1,630.14 and 1,643.80 throughout the session. 

The broader market remained negative, with decliners thumping gainers 658 to 255, while 419 counters remained unchanged, 1,161 untraded, and eight suspended.

Turnover stood at 1.46 billion units, valued at RM1.08 billion. 

Malacca Securities Sdn Bhd said that looking ahead, traders are expected to closely monitor upcoming economic data, including the US core retail sales, the US jobs data, and China’s gross domestic product.

Besides, with the weaker ringgit position, traders will likely shift their focus toward export-oriented sectors such as gloves and technology.

Investors may further add exposure to sectors that could benefit from Budget 2025, including construction, property, building materials, and utilities, it said in a note. 

On Bursa Malaysia, among the heavyweights, SD Guthrie and PMetal were 11 sen weaker at RM4.61 and RM4.71, respectively, YTL Corporation dropped 4.0 sen to RM2.27, Nestle fell RM1.70 to RM104.30, and KLK shed 28 sen to RM21.22. 

As for the active counters, Tanco slid 14 sen to RM1.36, Sime Darby Property fell 6.0 sen to RM1.49, Capital A rose 4.0 sen to 97.5 sen, Berjaya Corporation eased half-a-sen to 31.5 sen, and Aizo added half-a-sen to 14.5 sen.

On the index board, the FBM Emas Index decreased by 84.45 points to 12,239.75, the FBMT 100 Index lost 80.11 points to 11,944.76, the FBM Emas Shariah Index gave up 102.68 points to 12,131.15, the FBM 70 Index sank 138.82 points to 17,464.98 and the FBM ACE Index narrowed by 17.55 points to 5,057.94.

Sector-wise, the Financial Services Index weakened by 86.25 points to 19,328.74, the Plantation Index was 64.54 points easier at 7,202.81, the Industrial Products and Services Index trimmed 1.44 points to 174.19, and the Energy Index shed 10.10 points to 846.58.

Meanwhile, Bursa Malaysia in a statement has notified that Pan Malaysia Holdings Bhd (old stock short name: PMHLDG) has changed to a new name to Exsim Hospitality Bhd (new stock short name: EXSIMHB). 

The company’s securities will be traded and quoted under the new name with effect from 9.00 am, Friday, Oct 18, 2024. The stock number remains unchanged.
