BUKIT MERTAJAM, Oct 17 (Bernama) -- The PETRONAS BeDigital Bootcamp, recently held for the first time in the northern region, marked the fifth and last destination of the program for 2024.

The program is an initiative by PETRONAS' ongoing effort to enhance human capital in digital and communication, while also boosting employability in the workforce.

According to PETRONAS, the Bootcamp's modules focus on high-demand digital skills, such as artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, and participant presentation skills, highlighted through a 'shark tank pitch' experience.

The 10th cohort of the BeDigital Bootcamp saw participation from 98 students representing Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Penang Branch, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP).

A  participant, 25-year-old Muhammad Azri Abdul Lateb, shared that the 12-day program provided him with valuable knowledge and significantly boosted his self-confidence.

The Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering Technology graduate from Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), said the program helped him enhance his communication and AI skills, which he believes will better prepare him for the future.

"Additionally, we were taught, both directly and indirectly, to think critically, work in teams, and solve problems collaboratively, along with various other skills not typically covered in university," he told reporters when interviewed at UiTM Penang Branch, Permatang Pauh.

Another participant, Shabiella Sabri, 22, a Bachelor of Business Management graduate from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), said she was unaware that the program's primary aim was to equip local graduates to meet the demands of the competitive digital era.

"Thanks to PETRONAS for giving me the opportunity to join the program as I gained a lot. We were exposed to the technical knowledge on cybersecurity to personal development skills, and there were many new things that I and the other participants learned throughout."

"Honestly, I was happy and excited to participate because 100 per cent of the knowledge and skills were new to me. If other students get the chance to join the PETRONAS BeDigital Bootcamp, grab it,” she said.

Lau Pei Heng, 24, a graduate of UniMAP's Bachelor's Degree in Computer Engineering said that they were also exposed to digital and entrepreneurial skills to ensure that the graduates who participated in the program could improve their marketability in employability.

"For example, while I learned about technology and computers at UniMAP, the program also taught me additional skills, such as how to start a business and cybersecurity," he added.

Mohd Arif Jahjahah, 22, a Bachelor of Information Technology graduate from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), said the two-week PETRONAS BeDigital Bootcamp was well worth it, as it provided participants with new knowledge and experiences to strengthen their capabilities.

"Through this program, I can improve my soft skills, such as critical thinking, and enhance my technical skills, particularly using Power BI. It also challenged me to become more confident," he said.

Meanwhile, Amazon Web Services Malaysia Sdn Bhd (AWS) Country Manager, Peter Murray, noted that the program exemplifies how PETRONAS leverages its success and scale to invest in skill development across Malaysia.

"It has a direct impact on job creation and highlights the importance of digital skills for passionate young talents who will be the foundation of the future. Thank you PETRONAS for the clear leadership, and we look forward to supporting more BeDigital Bootcamp cohorts in the future," he said.

To date, a total of 860 students from 27 local universities, along with more than 90 partners, have participated in PETRONAS' BeDigital Bootcamps held across Sabah, Sarawak, the East Coast, and the Southern regions.
