LABUAN, Oct 17 (Bernama) -- The fish landing sector in Labuan has shown promising growth in the first ten months of 2024, totalling 2,409 metric tonnes valued at RM9.8 million.

Malaysian Fisheries Development Board (LKIM) Labuan director Fadhilah Azib said despite a slight decline compared to last year, the figure underscores the resilience and productivity of the local fisheries industry, contributing significantly to the island's food security and economy.

“The bulk of the catch includes a wide variety of species, such as tuna, sea bass, mackerel, snapper, grouper, and pomfret which are among the most sought-after for local consumption and export.

“The fish landed this year have also been reported to meet the health and safety standards required for both domestic and international markets,” she said to Bernama today.

She said the fisheries industry in Labuan is a vital component of the local economy, offering employment opportunities in the processing, transportation, and marketing of seafood products for the local community.

Fadhilah said the consistent supply of fish has helped keep seafood prices stable, ensuring affordability for local consumers while boosting the island's export capabilities.

“Labuan's strategic location and proximity to rich fishing grounds have made it one of Malaysia’s important fish landing centres.

“Efforts are being made to further develop sustainable fishing practices to ensure long-term environmental protection,” she said, adding that this includes encouraging fishermen to adopt modern fishing techniques and adhere to regulations designed to prevent overfishing.

“As Labuan continues to expand its fisheries operations, stakeholders are optimistic the island will not only meet its annual target but also strengthen its position as a key player in Malaysia’s seafood industry,” she said.
