KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 21 (Bernama) -- A total of 904 asnaf students from institutions of higher learning have received laptops from the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP), under its 2024 Laptop Assistance Scheme.

MAIWP chairman Syed Kamarulzaman Syed Kabeer presented the laptops to the recipients during the launch of the scheme, at the Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory Mosque, today.

In his speech, Syed Kamarulzaman said that the initiative was introduced by MAIWP to alleviate the financial burden on students, particularly those from the B40 group and asnaf, to support their educational pursuits.

“Each student received a laptop valued at RM3,800, with a total expenditure of over RM3.4 million in zakat funds,” he said.

Also in attendance were MAIWP acting chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Nizam Yahya and Federal Territories Mufti Associate Prof Datuk Dr Luqman Abdullah.

He explained that the recipients of today's laptops were selected from applications submitted between the end of last year and January 2024, with the scheme targeting 2,000 students annually.

Syed Kamarulzaman also highlighted that MAIWP has allocated over RM114 million for 12 zakat educational assistance schemes, ranging from school-level aid to IPT, this year.

As of this month, MAIWP has distributed RM827 million in zakat funds through various initiatives, with RM86.8 million channelled specifically towards schemes within the Education Cluster, he added.

He also said that MAIWP offers loan repayment assistance to any asnaf students who achieve a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.5 or higher.

“For asnaf students who are registered with MAIWP and obtain excellent academic results, MAIWP also helps to pay off their educational loans,” he said.
