KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 5 (Bernama) -- A local man, believed to have dragged a cat in a large net in Ampang has been identified by authorities, after a viral video of the alleged abuse surfaced on platform X last Sunday.
Ampang Jaya police chief ACP Mohd Azam Ismail confirmed that an investigation is underway. The suspect reportedly used a fishing net to restrain the animal, frustrated by frequent messes left by the cat outside his home.
The incident came to light after a 26-year-old Indonesian woman lodged a police report, stating she heard loud noises outside her house around 10 am last Friday.
When she looked out, she saw her neighbour, in his 60s, using a net to trap the cat and then dragging it for roughly 200 metres along the ground floor of the flat.
“Disturbed by the scene, the woman, accompanied by her husband and other concerned residents, confronted the man, urging him to release the distressed cat. Despite their efforts, the cat remained confined in the net,” he said in a statement today.
The investigation revealed that the suspect lives with his wife, and the case is being pursued under Section 428 of the Penal Code for mischief, Section 29(1)(e) of the Animal Welfare Act for animal cruelty, and Section 233 of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Act.
“The police have issued a warning to the public, urging everyone to refrain from any form of animal cruelty and emphasising the legal consequences of such actions,” he added.
