KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 13 (Bernama) -- The National Art Gallery is organising an art exhibition titled ‘Sunyi’ (Silent) and the 2024 Young Contemporaries Symposium in Langkawi starting Nov 15.

It said in a statement today that the two events are part of the 2024 Young Contemporaries Residency Programme, aimed at providing young talents with opportunities for growth and deeper exposure to contemporary art.

“This exhibition and symposium are important steps in preparing young artists to face the challenges of a broader art world.

“It also strengthens the National Art Gallery’s commitment to providing a space for them to create, engage with the art community and expand their creativity, which can have a significant impact on both the local and international art landscape,” it said.

‘Sunyi’, to be held at the old hospital building in Kuah, Langkawi, from Nov 15 to 24, invites visitors to explore the theme of 'silence' from various perspectives within the visual arts, addressing social and environmental issues in Langkawi in the post-COVID-19 era.

‘Sunyi’ also reflects the tranquility found in Langkawi's natural beauty and the more peaceful lifestyle it offers, far removed from the hustle and bustle of life in big cities.

“In this context, ‘sunyi’ is viewed positively, offering a space for reflection and appreciation of more noble life values, such as the ‘Nyepi’ celebration in Bali, Indonesia, which is observed in a quiet atmosphere imbued with deep spiritual meaning,” the statement added.

The exhibition will feature 11 young artists actively involved in creating site-specific installations. The artists include Alvin Lau, Arikwibowo Amril, Azam Aris, Fauzan Fuad, Hannah Moujing, Khabir Roslan, Ng Yi Kee, Ryan Tang, Sim Hoi Ling, Teo Wey Yinn and Ahmad Rajaie.

Meanwhile, the 2024 Young Contemporaries Symposium, to be held at the Grand Continental Langkawi Hotel from Nov 15 to 17, will discuss the direction of the Young Contemporaries programme and the importance of understanding location-based and community art concepts.

“It aims to inspire young artists to create relevant artworks aligned with set themes as they prepare for the upcoming Young Contemporaries Competition,” it said.

The symposium will bring together experts including curators and artists like Azzad Diah Ahmad Zabidi, Wong Hoy Cheong, Moelyono, Dr Tisna Sanjaya, and Muhammad Hazrin Abdul Malek @ Moktar, who is also the curator and director of the Langkawi National Art Gallery.
