KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 24 (Bernama) -- A total of 200 out of 400 units of new helmets provided at the special counter were distributed one hour after the counter was opened in conjunction with the Two Years of MADANI Government Programme  (2TM) which will conclude today.

A Bernama survey found that the special counter at the Road Transport Department (JPJ) booth which is open to the persons with disabilities (PWD), senior citizens and pregnant mothers finished its supply by 10am.

Another 200 units will be distributed for the afternoon session at the special counter. Today, a total of 1,500 new helmets including 400 for the disabled were provided at the JPJ booth.

JPJ provided 5,000 units of helmets with 1,500 successfully distributed to visitors on the first day and 2,000 units on the second day of the programme.

The JPJ booth, which was opened in conjunction with the 2TM Programme, which runs for three days from Friday from 9 am to 6 pm at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), received an overwhelming response with visitors starting to queue as early as 7.30 am to exchange their old helmets for new ones for free.

A disabled visitor, Hairudin Che Mat, 63, said he did not expect the waiting time to get a new helmet to be so short.

"As a senior citizen and also a disabled person, the JPJ gave us a little something special because there was no queue at all. I came at 9 am and was able to get into the counter at 10 am.

"The whole process was very easy because the JPJ really gave us priority (at the special counter). As soon as the KL-Car Free Morning event was over, I immediately came here because it was close," he told Bernama here today.

He said the selection of the distribution location was also strategic because there were many public transport facilities that could be used.

Meanwhile, Saffee Ahmad, 70, said that as an PWD and also a senior citizen, he was very grateful not to have to queue long to exchange his old helmet for a new one.

“I am old, so it is nice to have a special counter like this, for PWD and senior citizens who want to come and exchange their helmets, don't worry, you don't have to queue long because I finished in less than an hour,” he said.

The helmet exchange counter which is part of the 2TM Programme themed ‘MADANI di Hati, Rakyat Disantuni’ will end today with only 750 units remaining to be distributed in the evening session.
