MELAKA, Nov 24 (Bernama) -- State Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change, and Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Rais Yasin has slammed Opposition Leader Dr. Mohd Yadzil Yaakub’s claim that the state government lacks commitment in tackling recurring flash floods, calling it baseless and entirely unfounded.

He highlighted that the state government, in partnership with the federal government, has undertaken numerous comprehensive measures, including the construction of seven flood mitigation projects with a budget exceeding RM1 billion.

“During State Legislative Assembly sessions, I have repeatedly addressed questions on flood-related issues, including the financial contributions of both state and federal governments toward long-term flood management in Melaka.

“The state government also allocates RM10 million annually to the Department of Irrigation and Drainage for erosion repairs, drain maintenance, and improvements to drainage systems,” he said at a press conference after the presentation of aid boxes for the Jelajah Peduli Ummah programme in Paya Rumput today.

Rais, who is also the Paya Rumput assemblyman, added that Melaka’s four local authorities collectively allocate millions of ringgit annually to resolve flood issues, particularly in residential areas, through regular maintenance of drains and drainage systems.

Previously, Dr. Mohd Yadzil alleged in a Facebook post that Melaka's flash flood management was ineffective and claimed that the state government lacked a solid disaster management plan, particularly during the monsoon season.
