KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 28 (Bernama) -- MERCY Malaysia is committed to working closely with local authorities, non-governmental organisations and community leaders to ensure swift and efficient delivery of flood assistance to those in need.
Its president, Datuk Dr Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus, said flood disasters demand an immediate, integrated approach and closer collaboration with local communities, government agencies and humanitarian organisations to ensure a comprehensive and coordinated response.
“By working together, we can mitigate the impact of the monsoon season and address both the immediate and long-term needs of affected residents,” he said in a statement today.
Dr Ahmad Faizal added that the MERCY Malaysia team is currently on the ground to assess the situation and provide immediate assistance to affected communities.
In Kelantan, he said, a three-member team has been sent to Gua Musang for an urgent assessment, while some MERCY Malaysia members from the Kelantan branch are stranded in Kuala Krai due to rising floodwaters.
“Our team has started to mobilise relief efforts in Kelantan, with priority given to the safety of stranded colleagues and ensuring effective aid delivery,” he said.
In Terengganu, MERCY Malaysia has completed a four-day rapid assessment mission starting on Nov 22, which included visiting temporary relief centres and holding strategic discussions with local agencies to coordinate relief efforts.
Meanwhile, Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (ABIM) has launched a Flood Emergency Fund to assist those affected by the disaster, particularly in Kelantan, with an initial mission team from Global Peace Mission Malaysia to be deployed tomorrow.
ABIM is seeking donations of religious items, personal hygiene kits such as soap, medicine, toothbrushes, women’s kits including sanitary pads and wet tissues, and children’s toys, which can be sent to the ABIM Secretariat Hall at No 6, Jalan TC 2A/2, Taman Cemerlang here from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday.
The public can also make donations to ABIM’s Bank Islam account 14023010030552 with the reference ‘Banjir 2024’.
