KANGAR, Dec 4 (Bernama) -- A total of 200 volunteers from Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), including staff and students, joined forces with Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) under the MADANI KPT Ihsan Squad to carry out a post-flood relief mission, cleaning two schools severely affected by the recent floods in Jitra, Kedah today.
UniMAP vice chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Zaliman Sauli said the schools involved in the mission were Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Banai and SK Kepala Batas. The initiative was part of a collaborative effort sparked by the Ministry of Higher Education, led by Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, which focused on the cleanup of schools badly impacted by the floods.
"Once the floodwaters receded, both schools were left covered in thick mud, with significant damage to various items," he said in a statement today.
Zaliman added that the joint effort between UniMAP and UUM showcased the strong commitment and volunteer spirit of both universities in supporting affected communities, while reinforcing the social responsibility shared by higher education institutions.
"We are always ready to provide any assistance needed by the public, demonstrating the solidarity of our higher education community," he added.
Zaliman added that the mission was extended to the East Coast, where 100 volunteers from both universities are working to assist flood victims in the region.
UniMAP has been sending volunteers for flood relief efforts in Perlis and Kedah since Nov 30.
