KUALA TERENGGANU, Dec 19 (Bernama) -- The police have arrested a man and seized 36 kilogrammes (kg) of methamphetamine worth RM1.15 million, after stopping a Toyota Alphard on the East Coast Expressway 2 (LPT2) last Tuesday.

Terengganu police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairudin said the arrest, carried out by the Terengganu Contingent Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department with the assistance of the LPT 2 Bukit Aman Highway Patrol Unit, took place at around 4 pm at Kilometre 268.8, from Kuala Terengganu towards Kuantan, Pahang.

He said the arrest of the 29-year-old suspect, who is from Besut, was made following a tip-off from the public.

"An inspection of the luxury vehicle revealed 35 transparent plastic packages labelled 'Guanyinwang' which are believed to contain syabu (methamphetamine).

"The drugs are suspected to have been smuggled from a neighbouring country and were intended for distribution in the Klang Valley," he said at a press conference at the Terengganu police contingent headquarters today.

Mohd Khairi said the police also seized funds amounting to RM681,718.73 from the suspect's account for further investigation.

The suspect, who is unemployed and has two previous criminal records related to drug offenses, is currently under a seven-day remand starting yesterday.

"Further investigations revealed that the suspect had previously served a three-year prison sentence and received three strokes of the cane in 2015," he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
