KUALA TERENGGANU, Dec 23 (Bernama) -- The 42nd edition of the National Youth and Cadet Table Tennis Championship, currently being held in Terengganu, has brought together over 500 athletes from across Malaysia.
Terengganu Table Tennis Association (PPNT) president Professor Dr Mohd Asamudin A Rahman said the five-day event, which began yesterday, is being jointly organised by PPNT, the Table Tennis Association of Malaysia (TTAM) and the National Sports Council (MSN).
The championship features 12 categories, with a focus on athletes in the Under-15 (U-15) and Under-19 (U-19) age groups.
“PPNT is honoured to be entrusted by TTAM and MSN to host this event. The championship is an important platform to discover and develop table tennis talent, especially as the sport gains popularity,” he said during the opening ceremony.
The majority of Terengganu’s athletes in the championship are also representatives of the state in the Malaysia Games (SUKMA), which took place in Sarawak in August, he said.
Mohd Asamudin said PPNT's goal for this year's championship is to secure at least three bronze medals in the men's categories.
"We are not placing high expectations on the women's team as it is newly formed. Instead, this tournament will serve as a platform for them to gain exposure and prepare for SUKMA 2026," he added.
