KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 16 (Bernama) -- Japan has expressed hope that the ceasefire agreement on Gaza will lead to lasting stability in the region.

Japan’s Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya, in welcoming the deal reached on Jan 15, described it as a significant step towards alleviating the humanitarian crisis and de-escalating tensions, aligning with Japan’s long-standing calls for peace and stability in the region.

“Japan strongly hopes that this agreement will lead to the long-term stabilisation of the Israeli-Palestinian situation. We urge all parties to implement the agreement steadily and in good faith to end the unbearable suffering.

“The agreement stipulates the halt of military operations, the release of hostages, and the increase of humanitarian assistance activities, among other measures,” Iwaya said in a statement.

He commended the efforts of Egypt, Qatar, and the United States in achieving the agreement.

Iwaya highlighted Japan’s commitment to continued engagement with international efforts aimed at improving humanitarian conditions, supporting the reconstruction and governance of Gaza, and advancing diplomatic efforts towards a two-state solution.

“Japan remains in close communication with countries and international organisations concerned. We will redouble our diplomatic efforts to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region,” he added.

The ceasefire agreement, which will take effect on Jan 19 (Sunday), will be implemented over three phases. The initial 42-day phase includes the release of 33 Israeli detainees in exchange for an unspecified number of Palestinian prisoners.
