Barriers, Staff Assistance Key To PwD Safety In Public Transit

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 23 (Bernama) -- Installing barriers in high-risk areas, including on light rail transit platforms, is crucial to ensure the safety of Persons with Disabilities (PwD), especially those with visual impairments.

OKU Sentral president Datuk Ras Adiba Radzi said individuals in this group, especially those unfamiliar with high-risk areas, face dangers such as falling onto train tracks or into uncovered holes, which can be fatal.

"In the past, several incidents occurred involving visually impaired friends due to hazards in their surroundings, such as falling into uncovered or unguarded drains. This has led to some people going missing for days," she told Bernama today.

She also said that staff at public transport stations can assist visually impaired individuals, the elderly, and children in navigating these facilities.

Ras Adiba reiterated her call for all pedestrian designs, including those around public facilities, to meet universally friendly standards for PwDs.

Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif, when contacted, said City Hall prioritises universal designs, considering the needs of PwDs, including sidewalks and access roads to public transport stations.

"We will also conduct a more detailed study to assess the needs of this group in public transportation," she said.

Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of PwDs in public transport areas, as many depend on these mobility services.

"I hope that the safety of PwDs remains a priority, with staff stationed at public transport stations. Having someone present on the platform can help prevent accidents by providing warnings or assistance when needed," he said.

Yesterday, a visually impaired man was killed after falling onto the tracks and being struck by a train at the Titiwangsa LRT Station.

Following the incident, the Transport Ministry ordered a review and enhancement of safety measures at all train stations, especially on facilities for PwDs.
