KOTA BHARU, Feb 24 (Bernama) -- The Southeast Brigade of the General Operations Force (GOF) foiled an attempt to smuggle over 2,000 rose saplings at a roadblock in Lalang Pepuyu, Tanah Merah yesterday.
Its commander, Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid, said at 7 am, GOF personnel involved in Op Taring Wawasan stopped a suspicious-looking lorry.
“The suspect, a 24-year-old local man, believed to be transporting the plants for the local market, was arrested.
“An inspection found over 2,000 rose saplings believed to have been smuggled from Thailand inside the lorry. The total seizure value is estimated at RM650,000. The plants are also suspected to harbour pests and diseases,” he said in a statement today.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 5 of the Plant Quarantine Act 1976 (Act 167).
