Perak UMNO Aims To Retain Ayer Kuning But Will Not Underestimate Rivals

IPOH, Feb 24 (Bernama) -- Perak UMNO will not underestimate any opponent but is determined to keep the Ayer Kuning state seat under Barisan Nasional (BN). 

Perak UMNO chairman Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said efforts will focus on securing support from new voters in the constituency.

“On paper, the seat should be a comfortable win for the Unity Government candidate. In the last election, BN secured over 9,000 votes, while Pakatan Harapan (PH) received around 6,000.

“If combined, that gives us 15,000 votes from both coalitions. However, we cannot take this for granted as voter sentiment is dynamic. Efforts must continue to engage with voters, especially new ones,” he said.

He said this at a press conference after attending the Perak government’s 2025 Client Engagement Day at Stadium Indera Mulia here today.

Earlier, Saarani said Perak UMNO had submitted a notice to Perak State Assembly Speaker Datuk Mohammad Zahir Abdul Khalid regarding the vacancy for the Ayer Kuning seat following the passing of its incumbent, Ishsam Shahruddin, last Saturday.

Ishsam, 59, died of a heart attack after participating in a four-cornered football tournament at City Stadium, Georgetown, Penang, on Saturday.
