Puchong MP Proposes Moratorium On Medical Insurance Premium Hikes

14/10/2025 09:16 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 14 (Bernama) -- Puchong Member of Parliament Yeo Bee Yin (PH) has urged the government to impose a moratorium on all medical insurance premium increases beginning at the end of 2026.

She proposed that the moratorium take effect after the expiry of the current 10 per cent ceiling on premium adjustments and remain in place until the full implementation of the Diagnosis-Related Group (DRG) system across both the public and private healthcare sectors.

She said the move is expected to encourage insurance companies and private hospitals to invest their time and resources in assisting the government to fully implement the DRG system.

“If the government does not control private healthcare inflation, more patients will shift from private to public healthcare.

“This measure will also create pressure on insurance companies to manage claims from private hospitals and blacklist parties that tend to impose excessive charges, as some hospitals may transfer additional costs to policyholders,” she said during the Supply (Budget) Bill 2026 debate in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Yeo also proposed that the government expand the Corporate Green Power Programme to include existing electricity consumers instead of limiting participation to new demand only.

“This policy proposal would not only further stimulate the growth of the renewable energy industry but also help multinational companies operating in Malaysia meet their carbon targets and, in turn, attract more investments,” she said.

Meanwhile, Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (PH) called on the government to expedite the approval of the National Climate Change Bill.

He said the initial draft of the Bill has been completed and is ready to be tabled in Parliament, as it will serve as a key instrument and guide in addressing climate change.

“The implementation of the Carbon Tax, as announced under Budget 2026 and set to begin next year, requires the existence of the National Climate Change Bill,” he said.
