SHAH ALAM, Oct 16 (Bernama) -- A temporary relief centre has been activated to house 18 individuals from eight families following the storm that struck Kampung Medan in Kuala Langat near here yesterday.
Kuala Langar police chief Supt Mohd Akmalrizal Radzi said that in the incident, which occurred at about 4.15 pm, five schools, a hall and about 40 houses were reported to have suffered damage.
He added that the affected schools were Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Sijangkang Jaya, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sijangkang Jaya, SK Kampung Medan, Sekolah Rendah Agama (SRA) Kampung Medan and SK Jalan Tanjung.
Also affected were Dewan Wawasan Batu 9, the Sijangkang State Constituency Coordinator's Office, Batu 9 housing area and the Taman Sijangkang Jaya industrial area.
"A total of 11 pupils from SRA Kampung Medan suffered minor injuries, but only five of them were treated by Klinik Kesihatan Telok Panglima Garang staff, while the other six went home with their families.
"In addition, a man was injured in the eye and a woman had a broken leg after being hit by an iron bar during the disaster. Both victims are being treated at the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital (HTAR) in Klang,” he said in a statement today.
Mohd Akmalrizal said the incident, which has been declared as a Level 1 Disaster, however, did not result in any casualties, with only infrastructure damage reported.
He added that clearing and tree-cutting work with the cooperation of various parties has been ongoing since 4.30 pm yesterday.
"We would like to advise the public not to go near or enter the disaster area without permission from the authorities to avoid any unwanted incidents and not to disrupt the cleanup and rescue operations being carried out by the agencies involved,” he said.
