PM Anwar Observes Deepavali Preparation In Brickfields Walkabout 

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim spent some time observing the preparations of Hindus celebrating Deepavali in Brickfields here today.

The Prime Minister, who arrived at about 4 pm, was greeted by Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Datuk Seri R. Ramanan.

Upon arrival, Anwar spent about 30 minutes enjoying afternoon tea with the Indian community at Madras Bakery before going on a walkabout, visiting several shops and stalls at the Little India bazaar site in Brickfields.

Throughout the visit, Anwar mingled with the traders and visitors, who seized on the opportunity to shake hands with him and take selfies and record memorable videos with the Prime Minister.

A trader, 30-year-old R. Tashwindren, described the opportunity to meet and shake hands with the Prime Minister as a sweet moment for him.

"He was friendly and never acted awkwardly with the public. We feel appreciated when the leader himself comes down to observe our Deepavali preparations,” he said.

Meanwhile, visitor K. Meena, 32, said Anwar's presence reflected the government's concern towards all races in the country.

"Deepavali is not just for the Indian community, but also a time for all of us to celebrate the spirit of togetherness. I am happy because the Prime Minister came personally,” she said. 

Deepavali falls on Monday (Oct 20) this year.
