Johor Police Probe Link Between Online Game And Attack On Six-year-old

JOHOR BAHRU, Oct 29 (Bernama) -- Police have not ruled out the possibility that a six-year-old boy, who was seriously injured after being slashed and stabbed in Kampung Parit Nipah Laut, Batu Pahat, two days ago, was attacked by his nine-year-old brother under the influence of an online video game.

Johor police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said preliminary investigations found that the older brother allegedly acted out of anger after his online game ‘Roblox’ was disrupted, causing him to lose about one million accumulated points when the victim damaged his mobile phone.

“The motive is still under investigation, but our initial findings suggest that the boy may have attacked his younger brother because of the Roblox game, where the points he had collected were lost after his phone was damaged.

“The elder brother is believed to have experienced hallucinations at night as a result of the game, and seemed to be ‘instructed’ to harm his family members before attacking his brother with a knife found in the house,” he told reporters after attending the Johor police contingent’s monthly assembly here today.

Ab Rahaman said further investigations are ongoing, including obtaining a statement from the victim, who is currently being treated at Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital (HSNI) in Batu Pahat, to confirm the details.

He said the parents of the two children, both aged 40, have been remanded from today until tomorrow to assist investigations under Section 326 of the Penal Code and Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.

“The two children are currently under the care of the Social Welfare Department (JKM).

“However, we have detained the parents as we believe they were aware of what happened, though the matter is still in the early stages of investigation,” he said, adding that questioning has so far focused on family members.

Ab Rahaman said the investigation papers will also be referred to the State Legal Adviser’s Office to determine the next course of action.

Batu Pahat police chief ACP Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani was earlier reported as saying that investigations began after police received a report from the victim’s 41-year-old mother on the morning of the incident.

According to him, the woman woke up to find her son seriously injured in the neck and immediately took him to HSNI for treatment.
