PUTRAJAYA, Nov 6 (Bernama) -- The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) in Johor is poised to enter the ranks of the world’s top 10 busiest ports soon, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
He said this growth is driven by Denmark-based logistics giant Maersk’s decision to make PTP its main transshipment hub in Asia.
“PTP’s ranking continues to rise, with container handling increasing by more than 10 per cent. Maersk has designated PTP as its global hub, meaning all its vessels now dock or transfer cargo here.
“This positions PTP as a key transshipment hub for Maersk Line and will further boost its growth. We are confident that PTP will break into the global top 10 soon,” he told a press conference after the Ministry of Transport’s monthly assembly and Deepavali celebration here today.
According to Lloyd’s List 2024, PTP maintained its 15th position globally for both 2023 and 2024, with container handling rising to 12.25 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in 2024 — a 16.9 per cent increase from 10.48 million TEUs in 2023.
Recently, Alphaliner ranked PTP as the world’s fastest-growing port, recording a 15.4 per cent growth rate in the first half of 2025 and handling over 1.2 million TEUs monthly during peak periods without congestion.
This achievement, alongside Port Klang’s entry into the global top 10 in 2024, highlights Malaysia’s strengthening position as a key player in the global maritime industry.
Yesterday, Maersk launched its Maersk Mega Distribution Centre (DC), the company’s largest contract logistics facility in the Asia-Pacific region, expanding its warehouse capacity in Malaysia by over 30 per cent.
The 80,000-square-metre facility is also expected to attract investors in sectors such as aerospace, electronics, and retail - areas actively promoted by the government.
