KUCHING, Nov 22 (Bernama) -- Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Sarawak is a key strategic partner of the Sarawak government in advancing the state’s food security agenda, said National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang.

He said the institution of higher learning in Bintulu also now plays an important role as a centre for Bornean academia, a hub for tropical biodiversity research and a community development centre in the state.

“I am confident that the state government under the leadership of Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg will continue to support UPM Sarawak’s pursuit of excellence,” he said at UPM’s Sirih Pulang ke Gagang Homecoming Alumni XIII dinner here tonight.

He said UPM Sarawak continues to strengthen its role as a centre of educational excellence, noting that the campus, which began with only modest basic facilities in Semenggok, Kuching, has now grown into an influential institution of knowledge.

“This progress reflects the university’s continuous efforts to provide high-quality education along with increasingly comprehensive infrastructure to support academic and research needs.

“In line with this, it has emerged as an important centre of knowledge in various strategic fields, including modern agriculture, science, biodiversity, forestry and aquaculture,” he said.

He added that the breadth of disciplines led by the university also supports the state and national development agenda, making it one of the key institutions driving advancement in the country’s critical sectors.
