Police Vehicle Driver Detained After One Motorcyclist Killed, Another Injured In Accident

KANGAR, Nov 26 (Bernama) -- A police officer has been detained after the four-wheel-drive patrol vehicle he was driving was involved in an accident that killed one motorcyclist and injured another in an incident on Jalan Persiaran Wawasan, here last night.

Kangar District Police Chief ACP Yusharifuddin Mohd Yusop said that in the 10.20 pm incident, the police officer was believed to be performing patrol duties when the vehicle he was driving collided with two motorcycles ridden by the two victims coming from the opposite direction.

"Following the accident, a 24-year-old motorcyclist died at the scene, while the other injured victim, aged 25, is in the yellow zone at HTF (Tuanku Fauziah Hospital) in Kangar and is reported to be conscious," he said in a statement today.

He added that the deceased victim was taken to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB), Alor Setar, Kedah for a post-mortem examination.

Yusharifuddin said that initial investigations found that the accident was believed to be caused by the negligence of the vehicle driver. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving resulting in death.

Members of the public who have information regarding the accident are urged to come forward to assist with the investigation and also advised the community not to spread speculation that could disturb public order.

A video of the incident, which has been circulating on social media since early this morning, shows the police officer being surrounded by a crowd immediately after the incident occurred.
