MELAKA, Nov 27 (Bernama) -- Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh called on fishermen earning a livelihood at sea as well as traders operating in open areas and near the coast to remain cautious and be on alert following Tropical Storm Senyar.

He said the forecast indicating that Tropical Storm Senyar was approaching the waters of the Straits of Malacca showed that strong winds and heavy rain were expected to persist.

“I appeal to all of you, Melakans, to prioritise safety and stay away from risky areas. The safety of the people of Melaka is my priority.

“I have instructed all security and rescue agencies including the police, Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Force (APM) and People’s Volunteer Corps (RELA) to remain on maximum preparedness and be ready to assist at any time should anything unforeseen occur,” he said in a Facebook post tonight.

He also expressed solidarity with victims affected by disasters in other states and neighbouring Indonesia, which was currently facing severe floods.

“May Allah grant strength, protect all of us and ease the affairs of every victim,” he said.

Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip was earlier reported as saying that Tropical Storm Senyar was detected entering the waters of the Straits of Malacca since 3.30 pm today and was expected to bring continuous heavy rain, strong winds and rough seas.

He advised residents in Selangor, Perak and parts of Pahang to remain vigilant as the tropical storm, which could cause unstable weather, was expected to persist from as early as midnight tonight until Saturday.

Other areas expected to be affected by this phenomenon included Kedah, Penang, the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, the Federal Territory of Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor.
