SHAH ALAM, Dec 1 (Bernama) -- After creating a phenomenon in 2010, the popular fantasy film Magika is set to return with a sequel expected to reach audiences in 2027.

President and Group Chief Executive Officer of KRU Entertainment Sdn Bhd (KRUESB), Datuk Norman Abdul Halim, said the film titled Magika 2 is now in its early development phase, with the main focus on scriptwriting.

“I am still in discussions with Yusry (Datuk Yusry Abdul Halim) and Edry (Edry Abdul Halim)... The script is currently being developed and we aim to finalise it by mid–first quarter next year.

“Filming is expected to begin around July to September next year, before moving into post-production to ensure the release can materialise in 2027,” he told Bernama.

Norman said several characters from the first Magika film will be given a new direction in the sequel, along with the addition of new characters including Merong Mahawangsa, Raja Bersiong and Sang Kancil.

He added that the company has also approached several big names in the entertainment industry to participate in the project, and so far, the response has been positive.

“For the first Magika film, we managed to bring in an A-list and legendary cast. For this sequel, we want to maintain the same standard.

“We’ve spoken to several artistes and they are interested, but I can’t announce anything yet. When the time comes, I will reveal the cast,” he said, emphasising that the sequel will maintain a live-action format.

According to Norman, the main challenge is ensuring that the new screenplay remains relevant to current audience preferences, especially since it incorporates legendary folk elements.

The first Magika film, directed by Edry, featured a star-studded cast including Diana Danielle, Ziana Zain, Datuk M. Nasir, Ning Baizura, Datuk Aznil Nawawi, Maya Karin and Datuk Jalaluddin Hassan. It was also named Best Film at the 23rd Malaysian Film Festival (FFM23).

Yesterday, KRUESB and Landasan Lumayan Sdn Bhd (LLSB) signed a memorandum of understanding to develop Magika Studios, an edutainment-driven ecotourism theme park expected to be completed by mid next year.

The theme park will showcase animatronic and audiovisual performances based on Magika characters, incorporating elements of environmental conservation.
