SHAH ALAM, Dec 3 (Bernama) -- Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) is committed to nurturing new talent among young athletes to continue Malaysia’s excellent achievements on the international sporting stage, says its Vice-Chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Shahrin Sahib @ Sahibuddin.

He said the institution had a structured athlete development system encompassing talent identification, guidance, early exposure and special admission pathways for promising athletes.

According to him, UiTM continuously identifies sporting talent at each campus before selected athletes are given proper guidance, structured training and mentoring to ensure their potential is fully developed.

“In other words, we take care of our athletes. We also ensure continuity when they complete their studies, so that they can continue contributing to the country,” he said when met after the SEA Games Athletes Gathering with the UiTM Vice-Chancellor at UiTM Shah Alam here today.

At today’s event, he had the opportunity to meet some of the 44 UiTM athletes, comprising 19 men and 25 women, who will carry Malaysia’s challenge at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, scheduled to take place from Dec 9 to 20.

He also presented financial assistance as a morale booster to the athletes, underscoring the university’s commitment to safeguarding their welfare throughout their preparations and duties representing the country.

“If they succeed in bringing home medals, the university, based on existing policy, will grant a tuition fee waiver throughout their studies until completion,” he added.

For the record, UiTM athletes’ participation in this edition covers various sporting disciplines including archery, rugby, weightlifting, sailing, canoeing, handball, dragon boat, cycling, hockey, futsal, netball, karate, baseball, softball, petanque, woodball and kayaking.
